Tethered home chargepoints
Choosing and positioning a fixed-cable chargepoint for safe reach, handling and future vehicle use.
A tethered home chargepoint has its vehicle cable permanently attached to the charging equipment. In IEC 61851 terminology this is a Case C connection.
It is convenient because the cable is always at the parking space: release the connector from its holder, plug it into the vehicle and return it after use. The trade-off is that connector type, cable rating and length are part of the fixed equipment choice.
Tethered describes the cable, not the features
A tethered unit is not inherently faster or smarter than a socketed one. Charging power still depends on the supply, circuit, load control, chargepoint, cable and vehicle. Solar diversion, tariff control, app access, open-PEN protection and OCPP are separate product functions.
The fixed lead must have the phase and current capability required by the equipment. A three-phase chargepoint with an unsuitable tethered cable cannot deliver its intended rating, and a high-rated cable cannot make a single-phase supply or vehicle charge faster.
Cable reach and parking position
Measure from the proposed wall position to the vehicle inlet along the route the cable will actually take. Include:
- driving in and reversing into the space
- a vehicle parked slightly off centre
- charge ports at the front, rear and either side
- more than one household vehicle
- the likely position of a future vehicle
- room to handle the connector without pulling on the inlet
The cable should reach with slack but not leave large loops across walking or driving routes. Moving the chargepoint can be safer than choosing an excessive cable length to compensate for poor placement.
Government inclusive-design guidance also highlights cable weight, connector handling and access for people with limited reach or strength. Mounting height, approach space, grip and the force needed to move the cable are part of usability, not cosmetic details.
Storage is part of the installation
The chargepoint should provide or be paired with a suitable connector holder and cable-management arrangement. When parked, the connector should be protected in the way its environmental rating assumes and the cable should be clear of:
- vehicle tyres and sharp edges
- gates and garage doors
- standing water and garden equipment
- hot surfaces
- routes used by pedestrians, wheelchairs or pushchairs
Wrapping a lead too tightly can strain the cable and connector. Let the manufacturer’s minimum bend and storage instructions determine the holder arrangement.
Damage and replacement
The fixed lead is a wearing part. Inspect the sheath, connector, latch and strain relief. Stop using it after crushing, impact, exposed structure, burning, persistent heat or a lock fault.
A tethered cable should be replaced using a manufacturer-approved part and procedure. The chargepoint may contain terminals, seals, pilot wiring, temperature sensors and configuration that need correct reconnection and testing. Cutting the cable shorter, fitting a different connector or making a joint can invalidate product evidence and create an unmonitored failure point.
Replacement does not always require a new chargepoint, but it does require the equipment to be isolated and the completed assembly to be tested by a competent person under the manufacturer’s instructions.
Future compatibility
Type 2 is the normal UK AC vehicle interface, but some older vehicles use Type 1 and future ownership may change the practical port position. A tethered connector chosen for one vehicle is less adaptable than a socketed unit that accepts a different complete lead.
Do not solve a mismatch with an improvised adaptor or extension. If the household expects several vehicle types or an uncertain parking layout, a socketed chargepoint may be more practical.
Security and access
The vehicle normally locks the connector during charging. The chargepoint may also provide app, RFID or schedule-based authorisation. A permanently attached cable does not itself prevent unauthorised charging, and an app lock does not physically protect a cable left where it can be damaged.
For a shared drive or accessible location, the access-control design defines who may start a session, what works without internet access and how the unit is isolated for maintenance.
Smart-chargepoint duties
For a private chargepoint sold within the scope of the Great Britain smart-charge-point regulations, the smart requirements apply whether the unit is tethered or socketed. The cable arrangement does not prove compliance. The exact model’s statement of compliance and documented loss-of-communications behaviour provide separate evidence.
Cable arrangement and daily use
A tethered chargepoint fixes the connector type, cable length and storage position as parts of the installation. It avoids connecting a separate lead for each session, but the attached cable has to reach the vehicle inlet without crossing an access route or resting where it can be damaged.
A socketed unit separates the cable from the chargepoint. That allows a different length or compatible connector to be used later, while adding a separate item that must be connected, stored and kept secure.
