Charger cable routes and parking
How parking, accessibility, fixed wiring and charging-lead reach shape a safe home-chargepoint location.
A good chargepoint position is chosen from the parked vehicle back to the electricity supply, not from the nearest empty patch of wall. The charging lead needs to reach the inlet without stretching, crossing a pedestrian route or being driven over, while the fixed circuit needs a safe route of its own.
Plan for how the space is actually used, including a different car, imperfect parking and people carrying shopping or using mobility aids.
Map every parking position
The parking and cable plan records:
- the normal and occasional parking positions
- the current vehicle’s charge-port location
- likely port positions on a replacement or second vehicle
- doors, gates, steps, paths, bins and shared access
- places where a lead could be trapped by a door or tyre
- nearby taps, railings, street furniture and electrical equipment
- the route back to the supply and any separate consumer unit
- Wi-Fi, mobile or wired-network coverage where the product uses it
The lead should reach with slack. It should not be pulled tight around a bumper, suspended across an entrance or routed under the car. A longer cable gives flexibility but creates more cable to store safely.
An untethered unit lets the owner replace the lead with a suitable different length or connector later. A tethered unit is quicker to use but makes its fixed lead length and storage part of the installation decision.
Accessible everyday use
The connector, socket, controls and display should be within comfortable reach for the intended users and approached over a stable surface. The current accessibility and building guidance should be applied to the actual site rather than reducing it to one universal mounting height.
Check that:
- the unit can be reached without squeezing between vehicles
- the connector can be inserted and removed without excessive force or bending
- the screen and controls can be seen and operated
- the lead can be lifted and returned to its holder
- doors and gates still open when a vehicle is charging
- wheelchairs, pushchairs and pedestrians retain a clear route
A wall-mounted hook or holster should keep the connector protected and the lead off the ground when not in use. During charging, excess cable should be managed so it does not form a loop across the walking route.
Protect the wallbox and lead
Do not mount the chargepoint where a small parking error can crush it. A recess, return wall, kerb or suitable impact protection may be needed where vehicles manoeuvre close to the unit. The design should also avoid places where roof runoff, standing water, hose spray or garden work will repeatedly affect the enclosure.
Outdoor suitability is determined from the manufacturer’s environmental ratings and instructions, including water and dust ingress, impact, sunlight, temperature and mounting orientation. A single IP number copied from another charger is not a universal specification.
The charging lead and connector should not be driven over unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that duty. Inspect them if they have been crushed, cut or trapped, and stop using a connector with damaged pins, casing or seals.
The fixed supply-cable route
The installer designs the fixed circuit for its current, length, installation method, grouping, temperature, voltage drop, mechanical protection and fault conditions. The neatest-looking route is not necessarily electrically suitable.
Possible routes include surface-fixed cable with suitable protection, conduit or trunking, a route through the building, or a buried cable or duct to a detached parking area. The cable type and containment have to suit the environment; steel wire armoured cable is common outdoors but is not mandatory in every case and its armour must not be assigned an earthing or bonding duty without calculation.
For a buried route:
- establish the position of public and private services before digging
- agree the depth and mechanical protection for the actual ground use
- allow for driveways, planting, drainage and future excavation
- use suitable ducts, draw cords, warning measures and entry seals where specified
- record the route before it is covered
There is no safe generic trench depth for every garden, drive or roadway. HSE’s principles are to plan the work, locate and identify services, and use safe excavation methods.
Cable entries should preserve the building fabric and the chargepoint’s environmental performance. Drainage, fire stopping and sealing depend on the wall construction and route; improvised foam is not a universal detail.
Electrical boundaries around the parked car
The usable charging area matters to the earthing design. The connected vehicle should not create simultaneous contact between incompatible earthing systems, such as the home’s charging installation and nearby street furniture, another vehicle or an outbuilding on a separate earth.
The electrical design assesses the full reach of the lead, not just the intended bay. This is particularly important for shared parking, flats, boundary walls and cross-pavement charging.
The parking plan also affects open-PEN protection. A charger mounted indoors can still supply a car outdoors, so the wallbox position alone does not decide whether Section 722 measures are required.
Smart communications and load management
Test communications at the proposed mounting point before finalising it. Masonry, metal garage doors and distance from the router can weaken Wi-Fi or mobile service. If reliable connectivity is needed for a tariff or remote control, agree a supported wired, wireless or cellular solution.
Safety must not depend on a casual home Wi-Fi connection. The chargepoint should behave safely when communications are lost, and any load-management link on which the supply design relies needs a defined fail-safe state.
Where there is no driveway
Do not assume that a cable cover makes it acceptable to trail a private lead across a public pavement. Permission and policy are controlled locally, and a cable still affects accessibility, liability and highway maintenance.
Government guidance for England describes embedded cable channels and permanent under-pavement connections, but the decision to permit one rests with the relevant highway and planning authorities. Policies differ, and some councils do not permit private cross-pavement solutions.
A permitted cross-pavement installation depends on:
- whether the highway authority has a scheme or accepts applications
- who obtains the licence, permit and any planning consent
- who owns, inspects and maintains the pavement apparatus
- the required public-liability arrangements
- how the cable route preserves an accessible footway
- whether the chargepoint and earthing arrangement suit the street environment
- what happens when the resident moves or the apparatus is no longer used
A channel does not reserve the parking space outside a home. The installation must remain workable when another vehicle occupies it and must not encourage a lead to be stretched along the pavement.
Rules and schemes differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so England’s guidance should not be presented as UK-wide permission.
A practical pre-installation check
The final position can be tested by parking the car in both directions and using a tape or spare rope cut to the proposed lead length. The check includes each access route, doors, gates and the storage position for excess lead. The design then records the fixed cable route, earthing boundary, impact protection and communication plan.
