British Gas EV tariff
British Gas EV Power, an overnight two-rate import tariff needing a smart electricity meter.

The British Gas EV tariff, sold as EV Power, is a two-rate import tariff that charges 9p per kWh between midnight and 5am and a higher rate for the rest of the day. The cheap overnight rate is a whole-home rate: it applies to everything the property draws during that five-hour window, not only the car. That gives 35 hours of cheap electricity a week. It works with any make of EV and any home charger, and it needs a smart electricity meter. British Gas backs the supply with Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates and describes it as 100% renewable.
British Gas has run this tariff under several names. The current customer-facing name is EV Power, the tariff code for July 2026 is Electric Driver v3, and earlier versions were called Electric Driver and EV10.
Rates and what the tariff costs
On 22 July 2026, British Gas advertised the off-peak rate as 9p per kWh. Earlier versions and undated comparison pages can show different rates, so the address-specific British Gas quote and tariff information label should control.

The peak unit rate and the standing charge vary by region, as they do across the UK energy market. The exact figures for a given address only come from a British Gas quote. The tariff is fixed, so the overnight and peak prices are set when the contract begins and held for its term.
Whether it saves you money
The saving depends on how much electricity moves into the overnight window and how much remains at the higher daytime rate. A household with high daytime use and modest mileage can pay more overall even though each overnight vehicle charge is cheaper.
The reliable comparison applies both tariffs’ unit rates and standing charges to the household’s own half-hourly data. It should include the expected vehicle energy, any battery or appliance load that can genuinely move, and the daytime consumption that cannot. A supplier headline saving is based on a model household and is not a prediction for a particular address.
Eligibility and the smart meter requirement
To take the tariff a household needs an EV charged at home, which British Gas may ask you to prove, a smart electricity meter, payment by Direct Debit and an online account. British Gas installs a smart meter for free where there is not one already. A smart gas meter is not required; only the electricity meter needs to be smart.
The smart meter has to be capable of half-hourly readings so British Gas can see when electricity is used and apply the two rates correctly. The tariff does not work with an Economy 7 meter, and British Gas says storage heaters will not run properly if switched onto it.
British Gas states that the applicant must have an EV that they charge at home and may be asked to prove it. A household wanting a cheap window for a battery or electric heating without an EV should use a tariff whose eligibility covers that equipment, such as Heat Power, rather than assume EV Power will accept it.
Hive Power+ and the 25% charging discount
Hive Power+ is a 25% discount on the electricity used to charge the car, available to customers with a compatible Hive charger (the Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 or the Mini Pro 3) on any British Gas electricity tariff with a smart meter in credit mode. Combined with the 9p overnight rate it brings the effective charging cost to 6.75p per kWh. British Gas says that lets you drive 9,000 miles for about £185.
Power+ works by crediting 25% of the charging cost back onto the energy bill. You set when the car needs to be ready in the Hive app, and Power+ schedules compatible charging for cheaper and greener periods. On EV Power it keeps managed charging inside the tariff’s off-peak window. Power+ was previously called SmartCharge.
Buying a Hive charger also comes with a £20 Zapmap credit, roughly 100 miles of public charging, usable at Zapmap chargepoints across the UK. The credit goes to anyone who buys the charger, whatever British Gas tariff they are on, so it is a charger incentive rather than part of the tariff.
PeakSave Sundays alongside the tariff
British Gas PeakSave Sundays gives half-price electricity from 11am to 4pm every Sunday. It is a free scheme open to any British Gas electricity customer with a smart meter, not tied to the EV tariff, and it works alongside EV Power. British Gas reports more than a million customers signed up and over £36 million saved since it began. The discount is 50% of the unit rate credited back for use during the Sunday window and it appears on the next bill. Prepayment customers are eligible.
Even with the Sunday discount, charging the car during the 11am to 4pm window can cost more than the overnight rate, so EV Power customers are better off keeping car charging in the midnight to 5am period. British Gas is separately running a Free Electricity Sundays pilot in summer 2026 for standard variable tariff customers, offering free electricity on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. That is a limited trial and distinct from the half-price PeakSave scheme.
Contract length, exit fees and moving home
EV Power is a fixed 12-month contract with no exit fees for switching between British Gas tariffs, so you can move to another British Gas fixed deal during the term without penalty. At the end of the 12 months the tariff rolls onto the standard variable tariff unless you pick a new deal. The tariff is tied to the property’s smart meter and cannot be transferred when you move house; you would reapply at the new address if it qualifies.
British Gas has previously mishandled exit fees. In 2018 Ofgem found the supplier had given about 2.5 million customers incorrect information about exit fees and wrongly charged 1,698 of them during a switching window. British Gas paid £2.65 million in refunds and compensation over that and a separate overcharging issue that had wrongly put 94,211 customers on the standard variable rate, and it corrected its procedures.
Reading your usage on a multi-rate tariff
In-home displays are not reliable for showing costs on a two-rate tariff. One British Gas EV customer reported the display putting a charging session at around £10 when the correct multi-rate cost was closer to £2.50. Check the figures against your meter readings and your bills rather than trusting the in-home display for cost on a tariff with two prices.
If you also have a battery, solar or a heat pump
British Gas offers separate tariffs for homes that pair an EV with generation or storage.
Charge Power is aimed at homes with both an EV charger and a home battery. It gives half-price electricity from midnight to 5am every night, a 50% discount on the standard unit rate rather than the fixed 9p of EV Power, with the charging under the owner’s control and compatible with solar.
For solar or battery homes that export, British Gas runs SEG tariffs. Its premium export rate for British Gas electricity customers has been quoted at 12p per kWh on the current British Gas SEG page and at 15.1p per kWh in an April 2026 review, so the rate appears to have moved recently and is worth confirming before you rely on a figure. A lower flexible rate of around 3p per kWh is open to any household with renewable generation regardless of supplier, and a battery alone, with no panels, can qualify for the premium rate.
A household with both an EV and a heat pump can look at the British Gas Heat Power tariff instead, which gives half-price electricity from midnight to 7am and 1pm to 4pm, 70 hours a week. The overnight window runs two hours longer than EV Power’s, but the rate is a 50% discount on the standard unit rate rather than a fixed 9p, so the actual charging cost turns on what that standard rate is. British Gas also lists electric heating, EVs and home batteries as qualifying technology for Heat Power. It cannot be combined with PeakSave.
