AC charging

AC charging is EV charging where the chargepoint supplies AC to the vehicle and the vehicle's onboard charger converts that electricity to DC for the traction battery. It is the usual charging type for home wallboxes and many destination chargers, but the available speed still depends on the property supply, chargepoint rating, cable, vehicle onboard charger limit and control settings. It is different from DC rapid charging because the conversion happens in the vehicle rather than in the chargepoint. AC charging can still be smart, scheduled or solar-aware, but the AC label does not by itself promise 22 kW home charging, tariff compatibility, bidirectional charging, export income or a full battery by a set time.
