AC-coupled battery architecture

AC-coupled battery architecture is a home-battery layout where a separate battery inverter connects the battery to a property's AC wiring, often alongside an existing solar inverter.

An AC-coupled battery architecture uses AC wiring to sit a home battery on the AC side of a solar or household electrical system. A separate battery inverter converts the battery's DC to AC for the property and converts AC back to DC when charging the battery, so an existing PV inverter can often remain separate. The term describes system layout, not a particular product, tariff mode, backup circuit, export setting, DNO approval, MCS certification, installer design verdict or proof that the battery will charge from every source.
