An air source heat pump is a heat pump that collects heat from outside air and transfers it into the home for space heating, hot water or warm-air heating, depending on the system.

An air source heat pump is a heat pump that takes low-temperature heat from outside air and uses electricity to raise that heat to a useful temperature. In UK home energy paperwork, ASHP most often describes an outdoor unit connected to a wet heating system and hot-water cylinder, although air-to-air systems can warm indoor air directly and do not provide domestic hot water in that arrangement. The term identifies the heat source and basic heat-pump type, not the design quality, MCS certification, grant eligibility, planning status, heat-loss calculation, noise assessment, electrical-supply suitability or expected running cost.
