Balance point

Balance point is the outdoor temperature where a heat pump's available heating output matches the calculated heat demand for a building or heating zone. In heat-pump sizing tools, it can mark the intersection between the building load line and the heat pump capacity line; in hybrid controls, it may also be used as a capacity or cost-effectiveness threshold where a supplementary heat source is allowed to help or take over. It is separate from outside design temperature, heat loss calculation, bivalent point, weather compensation, heat-pump sizing, MCS certification, Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility, DNO approval, warranty cover and any promise of comfort, lower bills or carbon savings.
