Behind-the-meter vs in-front-of-meter

Behind-the-meter and in-front-of-meter describe the position of generation, storage or another energy asset in relation to a property's electricity meter. A behind-the-meter asset is on the customer's side of the meter, so its electricity can be used on site before it is imported from or exported to the distribution network. An in-front-of-meter asset, often called front-of-meter, is on the network or utility side and its output reaches an end user only through metered network supply. The shorthand BTM (behind-the-meter) and FTM (front-of-meter) can appear in battery, community energy and grid-storage documents.
