Default tariff
Also known as standard variable tariff
A default tariff is the supplier's standard variable tariff for imported energy when a household is not on a fixed or specialist tariff.
Default tariff is the energy import tariff a supplier normally uses when a household has not chosen, or is no longer on, a fixed or specialist deal. In domestic energy documents it usually means the supplier's standard variable tariff, where unit rates and standing charges can change rather than being fixed for the length of a contract. It affects what a household pays for imported gas or electricity, but it is separate from export tariffs, smart time-of-use tariffs, meter registration, SEG payments and whether solar, battery storage, EV charging or a heat pump will be economical.
