Energy Performance Certificate

An Energy Performance Certificate, often shortened to EPC, is the property energy-efficiency certificate used when a building is sold, let or newly constructed. It gives the building an energy efficiency rating from A to G, records information about energy use and typical energy costs, lists steps that could improve the rating and is valid for 10 years. A new EPC comes from an assessment by an accredited assessor; existing certificates can be found on the official register service for England, Wales or Northern Ireland, with Scotland using a separate service. In home energy work it may appear in sale, letting, survey, compliance or handover paperwork, but it is a property-level building certificate rather than approval for a solar array, battery, EV chargepoint or heat pump. It is separate from MCS certification, an electrical certificate, DNO approval, planning permission, Building Regulations completion evidence, product warranty cover, export tariff registration and proof that a specific installation is suitable.
