Equipotential bonding

Equipotential bonding is an electrical safety measure that connects specified conductive parts to reduce voltage differences during a fault.

Equipotential bonding is an electrical safety measure that uses bonding conductors to connect specified metalwork or conductive parts so they are less likely to sit at different touch voltages during a fault. In home energy work, the term may appear in electrical certificates, condition reports, Part P information, EV chargepoint paperwork and handover packs for solar, battery or heat pump installations. It is different from earthing: earthing provides a fault-current path to earth and helps protective devices operate, while bonding reduces voltage differences between conductive parts that could be touched at the same time. A mention of equipotential bonding does not say what work is needed, prove that bonding is adequate, confirm DNO acceptance, prove product compatibility or replace competent assessment of the actual installation.
