Export

Export is electricity flowing out of a property or installation to the electricity network. In home energy documents it most often describes surplus solar generation, battery discharge that is allowed to leave the site or bidirectional EV charging that sends energy towards the grid. Export is different from generation, import, self-consumption and backup power: a solar array can generate electricity that is used in the home, stored in a battery or exported, and an export reading only covers what crosses the boundary to the network. Whether exported electricity is paid for, capped by an export limit, registered through an export MPAN or allowed under a connection agreement depends on the meter, supplier, DNO and equipment settings.
