Fire stopping

Fire stopping is the sealing of joints, imperfect fits and service openings through a fire-resisting or fire-separating wall, floor, ceiling, shaft or cavity barrier so the element's fire resistance is not weakened. In home energy work, it can appear where PV, battery, EV charger or heat pump cables, pipes, ducts or mounting work pass through walls, floors, roofs, garages, lofts or protected routes. It is a passive fire-protection detail, not the same as a cavity barrier, weather seal, air seal, product fire rating, smoke alarm, fire-risk assessment, structural survey, planning permission, Building Regulations compliance, DNO approval or MCS certification.
