Grid-tied inverter

Also known as grid-connected inverter

A grid-tied inverter is an inverter designed to operate in parallel with the public electricity network rather than as a stand-alone power source.

A grid-tied inverter converts DC electricity from solar panels, a battery or another source into AC electricity while operating in parallel with the distribution network. In UK paperwork the same idea is more often described as a grid-connected inverter or as equipment connected in parallel with the public low-voltage network. The term points to the inverter's normal grid-connection role, not DNO approval, export tariff registration, backup capability, island-mode operation or whole-home backup design.
