Home area network

Also known as HAN

A HAN (home area network) is the smart-meter network inside a property that lets the communications hub, smart meters, an in-home display and authorised devices exchange data.

HAN (home area network) means the smart-meter network inside a home or small business that connects smart metering devices in the premises, including the communications hub, electricity and gas smart meters, an IHD (in-home display), a CAD (consumer access device) and other authorised devices where present. It is separate from the WAN (wide area network) that links the communications hub to the DCC (Data Communications Company) smart meter network, household broadband or Wi-Fi, supplier billing records, export MPAN setup, SEG registration, DNO approval, MCS certification and permission to pair unsupported devices or change commissioned equipment settings.
