Hydraulic separation

Hydraulic separation is the wet-heating design principle that lets two water circuits with their own pumps exchange heat without one circuit's pump forcing unstable flow through the other.

Hydraulic separation is the design principle or pipework arrangement that decouples two wet-heating circuits so a heat source circuit and a distribution circuit can run at their required flow rates with little pump interference. In heat pump and boiler systems it may be created with closely spaced tees, a low loss header, a buffer tank or a plate heat exchanger, depending on the design. It is not the same as hydraulic balancing, a buffer tank, heat pump sizing, primary pipework sizing, MCS certification, warranty approval or proof that a heating system is efficient or correctly designed.
