Inrush current
Inrush current is the short surge of current a device can draw when it is first energised, before it settles to normal running current.
Inrush current is the temporary current drawn when equipment is first energised. IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) 63129 describes it as transient current drawn after switch-on, often much higher than steady-state current, and links it to capacitances charging during power-up. In home energy work the label can appear on heat pump installation terminals, EV charger or inverter specifications and other equipment data where switching equipment or MCB (miniature circuit breaker) compatibility depends on the actual product and circuit. The number is not a normal running-current value and it is not a householder instruction to choose protective devices, reset tripped circuits, alter fixed wiring or judge DNO approval or MCS certification.
