Inverter clipping

Inverter clipping is output limiting that happens when a solar PV array could supply more DC power than the inverter can convert or deliver at that moment.

Inverter clipping is a solar PV behaviour where the inverter reaches a power limit and deliberately holds output below the power that the array could otherwise provide. It usually means the DC power available from the panels is above the inverter limit, so the inverter self-limits rather than trying to convert more power than it is rated to handle. In home systems, clipping may be expected for short periods where the array has been sized above the inverter output rating, but it should be read with the inverter datasheet, MPPT limits, DC voltage and current limits, AC output rating, temperature derating, export arrangements and monitoring data before it is treated as a fault or as wasted generation that could always have been used.
