Islanding

Islanding is the condition where part of an electrical installation or network remains energised while it is separated from the public electricity grid. In home solar and battery contexts the word appears in two different ways: unintended islanding, which grid-connected inverters are required to detect and stop through loss-of-mains or anti-islanding protection, and intentional islanded operation for designed backup or EPS arrangements.
