Low-temperature charging

Low-temperature charging is charging attempted when a battery is below the temperature range its manufacturer allows for normal charging.

Low-temperature charging is battery charging when the battery's cells or installation location are too cold for the manufacturer's normal charging limits. In home battery systems, the term usually appears as a temperature range on a datasheet, a BMS limit, a control-app warning or a winter charging delay. Lithium-ion batteries can often discharge at lower temperatures than they are allowed to charge, so a cold battery may still supply power while the system restricts solar or grid charging until the cells warm up. The exact limit is product-specific: one home battery datasheet lists charging from 0°C to 50°C, while Victron's lithium battery manual allows charging only from +5°C to +50°C and says the BMS should prevent charging below its minimum setting. The term matters because cold-weather charging limits can affect solar surplus capture, off-peak grid charging schedules and expected battery behaviour, but it is not a user override instruction or a reason to bypass manufacturer temperature protection.
