Maximum power point

Also known as MPP

The maximum power point is the voltage and current combination where a solar PV module, string or array produces its highest power under the conditions at that moment.

The maximum power point is the operating point where a solar PV module, string or array has the voltage and current combination that produces the most power under the irradiance and cell-temperature conditions at that moment. It appears in module I-V curves and in inverter material through MPP trackers, MPPT voltage ranges and string design limits. The point moves as sunlight, shade and module temperature change, so an MPPT function in an inverter or optimiser tries to keep the PV circuit close to that point within the equipment's voltage and current limits. Maximum power point is not the same as kWp, maximum input power, annual generation, export capacity, DNO acceptance or proof that a roof layout is suitable.
