MPPT (maximum power point tracker)

MPPT in solar inverters, hybrid inverters and related PV electronics.

MPPT (maximum power point tracker) is the control function that keeps solar PV modules operating near the voltage and current combination where they produce the most power for the light level and cell temperature at that moment. It matters because a PV module’s best operating point moves through the day as irradiance, shade and cell temperature change. On inverter and hybrid inverter datasheets, the useful details are the number of MPPT inputs, the voltage range and the allowed input current. Those figures affect how PV strings can be arranged across roof areas and whether shaded or differently oriented panels may need separate tracking inputs or module-level electronics. MPPT is not a promise that a system will remove every shading loss; it only describes how the electronics search for the best available operating point within the design and equipment limits.
