Neutral conductor

Neutral-conductor wording identifies the neutral side of an AC supply or circuit, not a sign that a circuit is safe, isolated or suitable for new equipment.

A neutral conductor is the conductor identified as neutral in an AC supply or circuit, commonly marked N in household wiring and equipment paperwork. In GB low-voltage supply rules, declared voltage is described between the phase and neutral conductors at the supply terminals, and Electrical Safety First plug guidance shows the blue plug wire connected to neutral (N). Neutral is separate from the protective earth conductor, even though distribution-network arrangements may connect the supply neutral to earth or combine neutral and protective functions outside the consumer's installation.
