Permitted development rights

Permitted development rights are a national grant of planning permission for certain works or changes of use, so a separate planning application is not needed when the proposal stays within the relevant class, limits and conditions. In home energy work the term appears in checks for roof-mounted or stand-alone solar equipment, air source heat pumps and EV chargepoints. It does not mean every installation is covered: rights can be limited by the site, designation, article 4 directions, existing planning conditions, prior approval requirements or other consent regimes such as building regulations.
