Prepayment meter
A prepayment meter is an electricity or gas meter, or smart-meter mode, where the household adds credit before using energy.
A prepayment meter is an electricity or gas meter, or a smart-meter prepayment mode, where energy is paid for in advance by topping up credit before it is used. The credit may be added with a key, card, app, phone service or IHD (in-home display), depending on the meter and supplier, and standing charges still apply. It is separate from the unit rate, standing charge level, account debt, credit-meter mode, smart-meter communication status, SEG registration, export MPAN setup, DNO approval, MCS certification, solar PV generation, battery, EV charging or heat pump control compatibility and proof that a bill is accurate.
