Price cap

The price cap is Ofgem's limit on the unit rates and standing charges suppliers can charge households on standard variable gas and electricity tariffs.

Price cap usually means Ofgem's domestic energy price cap: the limit on the amount a supplier can charge for a unit of energy and the daily standing charge on standard variable tariffs. It does not cap the household's total bill, because the bill still depends on how much gas or electricity is used. The cap level is reviewed every three months and the rates can vary by region, payment method, fuel type and meter type. It is separate from fixed tariffs, smart time-of-use tariffs, export tariffs, SEG payments, export meter readings, meter registration, DNO approval and device-control settings.
