Primary pipework sizing checks whether the main heating-water pipework can carry the required heat pump flow without excessive pressure drop or velocity.

Primary pipework sizing is the design check for the pipes that carry heating water between a heat pump, buffer or low-loss header, hot-water cylinder and the main heating distribution. It links the required heat output to flow rate, flow-and-return temperature difference, pipe internal bore, water velocity, pressure drop and the pump head available from the selected equipment.
