PV ramp rate
Short-term solar PV output changes, cloud-driven variability and smoothing controls.
PV ramp rate describes how quickly the output from a solar PV system rises or falls over a defined time interval. It is usually discussed as a change in power over seconds or minutes and sometimes as a percentage of the PV system rating per minute. Passing cloud and rapid irradiance changes can make PV output move sharply. In grid-connected PV, a ramp-rate limit or smoothing control may use the inverter, battery or other storage device to reduce sudden changes in exported power rather than sending the full short-term swing straight to the grid. In domestic systems, the term is most likely to appear in inverter, battery, monitoring or grid-connection material. It is about short-term power movement, not the total kWh generated over a day or the long-term output of the solar array.
