Smart export meter exchange timing
Smart export meter exchange timing is the setup period while a supplier confirms that the meter can provide half-hourly export readings, arranges a suitable smart or export meter if needed and links the installation to an export MPAN before SEG payments can start.
Smart export meter exchange timing is a shorthand label for the delay that can happen when a solar PV or battery export-tariff application needs the meter, export MPAN and supplier systems to be ready before SEG payments begin. GOV.UK says a SEG tariff applicant must have a meter capable of half-hourly export readings, typically a smart meter, and Ofgem generator guidance says SEG licensees are not required to accept a request for SEG payments until they have access to or have received readings from the export meter. If the existing meter cannot be used for remote export readings, the supplier may need a meter exchange, export-register setup, manual reading process or export MPAN registration before the contract and payments run normally. Supplier timescales and backdating rules vary, so the phrase should not be read as a guaranteed waiting time, a DNO approval, a meter-accuracy verdict, export-tariff acceptance, MCS certification or proof that a solar or battery installation is ready to export.
