SMETS2 / Second-generation smart meter standard

Also known as Second-generation smart meter standard, SMETS2

Second-generation UK smart metering standard for current domestic smart meters, supplier switching and smart-tariff meter communications.

SMETS2 means the second generation of the UK Smart Metering Equipment Technical Specifications. It is the smart meter standard used for current domestic installations and is designed to work through the national Data Communications Company network rather than a supplier-specific connection. Automatic meter readings, in-home display updates and supplier switching should keep working without the meter losing its smart functions. SMETS2 also matters for smart tariffs because the supplier needs reliable meter communications and readings before it can bill time-of-use periods or other smart-meter products correctly. A SMETS2 meter still depends on the communications hub, network coverage, supplier systems and the property being set up correctly, so the label does not by itself guarantee that every smart-tariff, export or device-integration feature is available.
