Vehicle-to-grid is bidirectional EV charging that can discharge electricity from a compatible vehicle battery through a suitable chargepoint back to the electricity network.

Vehicle-to-grid, often shortened to V2G, is a form of bidirectional EV charging where a compatible vehicle battery can export electricity through a suitable chargepoint to the electricity network. It sits under the wider V2X umbrella, but it is narrower than vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-load because the destination is the grid rather than a home circuit, building or appliance. V2G needs a compatible EV, bidirectional chargepoint, communication and control setup, supplier or aggregator arrangement and the relevant connection, metering and export setup. The term does not mean every EV can export, every bidirectional charger can trade with the grid, that V2G is widely available for UK households today or that it provides backup power.
