Voltage rise

Voltage rise is the increase in voltage that can occur when generation or export pushes electricity back through a cable or local network.

Voltage rise is an increase in voltage along a cable, installation or local distribution network when electricity flows from a generator, battery inverter or bidirectional charger towards the grid. In home energy documents, it most often appears around solar PV export, battery export, vehicle-to-grid equipment, inverter nuisance tripping, cable sizing and DNO connection assessment. It is different from the normal supply-voltage range: the network may already sit within its permitted voltage limits, while extra export and the voltage change along the inverter's AC cable can still leave the inverter seeing a voltage that is too high. A voltage-rise note should be read with the inverter settings, cable route, export limit, phase arrangement, connection paperwork and DNO requirements rather than treated as proof that export is refused, that an inverter is faulty or that a larger cable, battery or voltage optimiser is automatically the answer.
