A WAN (wide area network) is the smart-meter communications path that links a property's communications hub to the DCC smart meter network rather than to the household's Wi-Fi.

WAN (wide area network) means the smart-meter communications path between a property's communications hub and the DCC (Data Communications Company) smart meter network. In Great Britain smart metering, the WAN can use mobile-phone or long-range radio technology to carry meter readings, prepayment messages and other authorised smart-meter messages to and from suppliers and authorised parties. It is separate from the HAN (home area network) inside the property, ordinary broadband, Wi-Fi, supplier billing records, export MPAN setup, SEG registration, DNO approval, MCS certification and permission to pair unsupported devices or change commissioned equipment settings.
