Sunny Boy Storage is a single-phase battery inverter for adding an approved high-voltage battery to an AC electrical system. SMA still publishes the family in its battery-inverter catalogue and current technical documentation. Current new-product availability in the UK is unconfirmed and remains specific to the exact code.

Power classes and batteries

The family comprises SBS3.7-10, SBS5.0-10 and SBS6.0-10, rated at 3.68, 5.0 and 6.0 kW at 230 V. All three have three battery DC inputs, a 100 to 550 V operating range and 600 V maximum DC input. Battery compatibility is limited to SMA’s approved high-voltage battery schedule.

SMA expressly says that SMA Home Storage cannot be retrofitted to Sunny Boy Storage. Both products use high-voltage batteries, but that voltage description does not establish compatibility.

Backup functions

Secure Power Supply can provide a manually activated output of up to 16 A when the grid is unavailable, subject to battery condition and the documented circuit arrangement. That is different from automatic whole-home backup. Battery-backup operation needs a compatible automatic transfer switching device and a designed set of backed-up circuits.

Maximum efficiency is 97.5%. The IP65 unit measures 535 by 730 by 198 mm and weighs 26 kg.
