SMA Home Storage is a modular high-voltage battery for SMA’s current Smart Energy hybrid inverters. Each module provides 3.28 kWh usable energy, and one to five modules give 3.28 to 16.4 kWh usable.

Capacity and electrical data

Nominal voltage rises by 96 V per module, from 96 V for one module to 480 V for five. Maximum charge and discharge current is 36 A, while the connected inverter can impose a lower limit.

Each module measures 610 by 483 by 214.6 mm and weighs 38 kg.

Compatibility and a document conflict

Home Storage is compatible with Sunny Boy Smart Energy and Sunny Tripower Smart Energy. It is not compatible with Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 or 3.7 to 6.0, despite that older inverter also accepting high-voltage batteries.

The current Home Storage datasheet and April 2026 Sunny Boy Smart Energy release notes support five modules and 16.4 kWh. An older FAQ answer on the same inverter page says a maximum of four because of a 500 V limit. That answer is inconsistent with the newer schedule. The exact inverter code, current firmware and latest released configuration should therefore govern a five-module design.

Enclosure and temperature

The enclosure is IP65. Its operating range is -10°C to 50°C for discharge and 0°C to 50°C for charging.
