SMA Sunny Boy 3.0 to 6.0 is a single-phase string-inverter family for residential solar. The current schedule contains 3, 3.6, 4, 5 and 6 kW classes. It converts PV power only: it has no direct battery connection and does not create an islanded backup supply.
PV input and model identity
The current generation has two MPPTs. This can accommodate two electrically different sub-arrays, such as roof planes with different orientations, within the model’s voltage and current limits. Strings on one tracker still need a compatible design.
The full code matters because several Sunny Boy generations remain installed. The current manuals use the SBx.x-1AV-41 family, while older -40 and earlier transformerless models have different input limits, communications and certification records. A generic Sunny Boy name is not enough for string design or replacement.
SMA gives a 17.5 kg weight for the current family and uses external connections for installation. The model-specific datasheet remains necessary for dimensions, tracker currents, voltage window, output current and enclosure conditions.
Monitoring and expansion
Current units provide WLAN and Speedwire communications, a local web interface, Sunny Portal integration and Modbus support. SMA Smart Connected can provide automatic inverter monitoring when it is activated during portal registration.
An SMA Energy Meter or Sunny Home Manager can add power-flow measurement and export or self-consumption control. The measurement device and its location determine which values the portal can calculate.
An AC-coupled battery can be added elsewhere in a suitable installation. That does not turn Sunny Boy into a hybrid inverter, and battery charging, backup and DNO treatment remain functions of the complete system.
Safety and grid connection
SMA lists ShadeFix and ArcFix on the current family. The exact firmware and country settings should be kept current within the supported release path. Arc detection does not replace correct connector assembly, cable routing, DC isolation or inspection.
The exact model’s current ENA type-test record, phase arrangement, registered capacity and export controls determine the UK connection route.
