SMA Sunny Boy Smart Energy is a single-phase hybrid inverter that combines PV conversion and a high-voltage battery interface. The general product schedule covers 3.6, 4, 5 and 6 kW. The 8 and 9.9 kW versions on the global page are marked Italy-only and are not established as UK products by that page.
PV and battery inputs
The 3.6 to 6 kW models have three MPPTs. The exact model datasheet sets each tracker’s voltage and current limits, so three trackers do not mean any three arbitrary strings will fit.
SMA Home Storage is supported, alongside other batteries on SMA’s current released-battery list. Compatibility depends on battery model, module count, inverter firmware and the current planning document. A high-voltage label alone is insufficient.
The inverter can operate without a battery as a PV inverter, and a supported battery can be added later. That does not guarantee that future battery generations will remain compatible with today’s inverter.
Secure Power and full backup
Sunny Boy Smart Energy includes a Secure Power output for selected loads. SMA also offers Backup 1P and Backup 3P arrangements. Full-home operation requires the appropriate transfer equipment, a compatible battery and the approved isolation, protection and earthing design.
The three-phase backup kit uses phase coupling, but the inverter remains a single-phase power source. The system documents define load distribution, output limits and which three-phase loads cannot operate. Secure Power and full backup use the same inverter output and are alternative configurations.
Monitoring and UK connection
The family uses Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS, local commissioning and supported metering for energy flows. Firmware release notes include UK certification and G100-related changes, so the installed release and country settings matter.
The exact model’s ENA record, battery, backup equipment and registered capacity define the connection arrangement. Warranty depends on country, registration and model-specific terms rather than the family name alone.
