Sunny Island X 30 / 50

Sunny Island X is a modular 30 or 50 kW battery-inverter platform for commercial on-grid and off-grid systems using approved batteries.

Sunny Island X is SMA’s newer commercial battery-inverter platform for on-grid and off-grid systems. The family comprises SI30-20 and SI50-20. SMA’s global documentation is current, but UK new-supply status was not confirmed in this review.

System role

Each Sunny Island X is a battery inverter, not a solar string inverter. It connects an approved battery to an AC system and can form part of a modular installation. An integrated DC-to-DC stage allows several approved third-party battery families, but compatibility still depends on SMA’s current battery list, battery-management communications and firmware.

For on-grid use without backup, the product can provide integrated energy management in a supported arrangement. Backup and off-grid designs are different. SMA says a Sunny Island X Connection Box is required to integrate a generator or utility grid in off-grid systems, while its backup accessory provides automatic transfer. Exact switching and system-controller requirements depend on the topology.

Scale and controls

The two model codes denote 30 and 50 kW classes. SMA confirms 50 kW at 400 V AC for the larger version. Larger systems can combine units under the specified SMA controller and connection-box architecture, but published maximums vary by application. They should be taken from the current planning documents rather than applied as a general parallel limit.

Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS provides system monitoring. Sunny Island X is not compatible with Sunny Home Manager 2.0 in the same way as a domestic SMA home system, and it cannot simply be mixed with the older Sunny Island 6.0H / 8.0H platform.

Warranty and project configuration

SMA states a ten-year arrangement made up of five years plus five after qualifying registration. A complete UK configuration identifies regional supply, approved batteries, model code, firmware, controller, connection box, ENA evidence and warranty terms.
