Sunny Island 6.0H and 8.0H are SMA battery inverters for grid-connected self-consumption, backup and off-grid systems. They do not contain solar MPPT inputs. Solar generation is normally AC-coupled through compatible PV inverters within a designed Sunny Island system.
Family status and configurations
SMA states that Sunny Island 4.4M is no longer produced. The current product page focuses on 6.0H and 8.0H, while continuing to provide documents for the older version.
A single inverter provides a single-phase battery-inverter system. SMA also documents up to three units in a single-phase cluster, three units forming a three-phase cluster and larger multicluster arrangements. These are engineered configurations, not permission to parallel arbitrary quantities or mix versions.
Batteries and system design
The manufacturer maintains a permitted-battery list covering specified lead-acid and lithium-ion products. Compatibility depends on the battery model, battery-management communication and applicable firmware. SMA Home Storage is not presented as the battery for this Sunny Island generation.
Backup and off-grid operation need the documented switching, protection, earthing, neutral treatment and generation controls. A Sunny Island nameplate does not by itself show whether an installed system supplies every circuit, only selected circuits or no backup at all.
The current page states IP54 protection and a ten-year warranty. It also describes operation from one unit through clustered systems, including three-phase arrangements. The actual installation limits are set by the planning guide, operating manual and battery approval current for the exact device and firmware.
Installed-system identity
The installed-system record includes the complete model code, serial number, firmware, battery make and model, cluster role and any transfer equipment. Those details determine the applicable replacement, service and warranty documents.
