Tesla Backup Gateway 2 is the metering, control and isolation enclosure used in a UK Powerwall backup installation. It measures power flows at the site, coordinates battery operation and detects a network outage. Its switching function then separates the backed-up installation from the public network before Powerwall supplies it as an island.
Role in a Powerwall system
Backup Gateway supports Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems. It is the supported islanding device for Powerwall 3 backup. Powerwall 3 can alternatively be installed without backup using a Tesla Remote Meter, in which case the gateway is not required. Powerwall 2 backup does use the gateway.
The presence of a gateway does not establish the extent of backup. The installation can support the whole home or a selected distribution board, depending on the design, approved ratings and available battery power. Circuit grouping, earthing, neutral arrangements and protective devices are installation-specific.
Electrical and physical specification
Nominal voltage is 230 V line-to-neutral and 400 V line-to-line. Backup Gateway 2 supports single-phase and three-phase feed-in. The maximum overcurrent protective device is 100 A for a single-phase service and 80 A for a two- or three-phase service. TN networks are supported. TT support starts at gateway part number 1152100-13-H; earlier part numbers should not be treated as TT-compatible.
Backup Gateway 2 measures 584 by 380 by 127 mm and weighs 11.4 kg. It is wall-mounted, rated IP55 and suitable for indoor or outdoor operation from -20°C to 50°C. Its DIN rail has space for up to nine single-pole breakers.
Backup Gateway 2 is not a standalone battery or inverter. Its role is metering, control and grid isolation within the configured Powerwall system.
