SmartSolar MPPT is the name used across a wider range of Victron solar charge controllers. The current 100/30 and 100/50 pair share one manufacturer product page and datasheet.

What the numbers mean

The first number is the maximum PV open-circuit voltage and the second is the rated battery-charge current. Both products therefore have a 100 V maximum PV open-circuit voltage. The 100/30 charges at up to 30 A, while the 100/50 charges at up to 50 A.

Both automatically select a 12 V or 24 V battery system. The nominal PV power changes with that battery voltage: 440 W at 12 V or 880 W at 24 V for the 100/30, and 700 W at 12 V or 1,400 W at 24 V for the 100/50. Maximum PV short-circuit current is also model-specific at 35 A and 60 A respectively.

These figures are separate string-design limits. 100 V is not the normal operating voltage or a panel wattage. The array’s cold-condition open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current need to remain within the controller’s limits. Connecting additional panel power does not permit either electrical limit to be exceeded.

Charging and communications

The controller tracks the PV array’s maximum power point and applies a programmable multi-stage battery-charge algorithm. Both products have 98% maximum conversion efficiency, natural cooling and full rated output up to 40°C.

Bluetooth is built in for setup, monitoring and supported synchronisation through VictronConnect. VE.Direct provides a wired route to compatible GX equipment or another supported interface. A Cerbo GX can add wider system monitoring, but it does not change the controller’s PV or charge-current limits.

Not a grid-tied inverter

The 100/30 and 100/50 convert PV power to controlled DC for a battery. They do not connect the panels directly to the public AC network and are not substitutes for a grid-tied PV inverter. G98 or G99 status for a complete installation must be established from the AC generating equipment and overall arrangement, not from the SmartSolar controller.

The enclosure ratings also have two parts: IP43 for the electronics and IP22 for the connection area. Neither should be restated as one higher whole-product rating.
