GivEnergy’s EV charger is a wall-mounted home charge point sold as a single model under the code GIV-EV-7.2. It is a 7 kW charger with a captive Type 2 lead and solar diversion, designed to sit alongside a GivEnergy solar and battery system.
Power, connector and solar diversion
The charger is single-phase only. There is no three-phase version in the range.
The lead is captive rather than a separate cable, so the car plugs straight into a fixed Type 2 connector. Cable length and colour are the only things that change between retail listings; the electrical rating is the same across all of them.
Solar diversion routes electricity that would otherwise be exported to the grid into the car instead. For that to work the charger has to see how much surplus the house is generating, which comes from a GivEnergy metering current transformer (CT) clamp, the GivEnergy cloud or a hard-wired GivEnergy Gen 3 inverter. Diversion begins once the surplus clears the minimum current an electric car will accept, so a small amount of excess stays below the threshold and keeps exporting.
Load current limiting
The charger can hold back its charge current as the whole-house load approaches the main fuse rating, a limit the installer sets at commissioning. It differs from dynamic load balancing, which trims charging moment to moment using a CT clamp on the incoming supply. This is a static ceiling referenced to the main fuse.
PEN fault detection and earthing
The charger has built-in protection against an open PEN (protective earth and neutral) fault, the condition where a broken combined neutral-and-earth conductor in the supply network can leave exposed metalwork live. Because that protection is integrated, the installation does not need a separate earth electrode driven into the ground.
Smart charging and regulatory compliance
The charger supports OCPP 1.6J, the open standard that lets a charge point exchange commands and data with a back-end management system rather than a single manufacturer’s cloud. It meets the 2021 EV smart charge point regulations: charging on a stored schedule starts after a randomised delay of up to ten minutes, which spreads the surge that would otherwise hit the grid when many cars begin charging at the same off-peak clock time, and a tamper switch cuts charging and raises an app alert if the front cover is removed.
Connectivity and control
Connection to the home network is by WiFi or wired ethernet. There is no cellular option, so the mounting position has to be within reach of the home network. Charging can be started by plugging in, by tapping one of the two supplied RFID cards or from the GivEnergy app.
Installation and compatibility
The charger is rated for outdoor mounting and runs on natural convection cooling with no fan. Upstream it needs installer-supplied protection: a 32 A double-pole miniature circuit breaker (MCB) and, per the UK wiring regulations (BS 7671), an external Type A residual current device (RCD) or residual current breaker with overcurrent protection (RCBO), alongside the charger’s integrated Type B residual protection. Solar diversion depends on one of the GivEnergy sensing options being present, so a system without a compatible GivEnergy meter, cloud link or Gen 3 inverter can still charge but cannot divert.
Availability and manufacturer status
GivEnergy Ltd entered administration and ceased trading on 9 April 2026, so the charger is recorded as withdrawn from new supply by that manufacturer. The January 2025 datasheet remains useful for installed model GIV-EV-7.2 units. The three-year figure is the warranty term originally published for the product; the administrator has stated that GivEnergy Ltd will honour no further hardware warranties.
Reading the model code
The “7.2” in GIV-EV-7.2 is a product code, not a power figure. The rated output is 7 kW, so the SKU should not be read as a 7.2 kW charger.
